When Drought Strikes, Should U.S. Policy Endanger Hungry People?

by Marlo Lewis, July 20, 2012

The question answers itself. Of course not. But that is the effect of the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS), more commonly known as the ethanol mandate.

Under the RFS … refiners must sell specified amounts of biofuel each year. The “volumetric targets” increase from 4.0 billion gallons in 2006 to 36 billion gallons in 2022. The amount of corn ethanol qualifying as “renewable” maxes out at 15 billion gallons in 2015. Already, ethanol production consumes about 40% of the annual U.S. corn crop. …

… the RFS sets aside a large and increasing quantity of the U.S. corn crop each year for ethanol production regardless of market demand for competing uses—and heedless of the potential impacts on food prices and world hunger. No matter how much of the U.S. corn crop is ruined by drought, no matter how high corn prices get, no matter how many people in developing countries are imperiled, the RFS requires that billions of bushels of corn be used to fuel cars rather than feed livestock and people. This is crazy.

“Corn futures hit their all-time high this week, exceeding $8.00 per bushel. Soybean prices are also at record levels. More than 1 billion of the world’s people live in absolute poverty (defined as an income of less than $1.25 per day). When prices for staple commodities soar, millions of people can be pushed to the brink of starvation.

“Why as a matter of law should ethanol producers get first dibs on the U.S. corn crop? … [Read the rest.]

Cornwall Alliance’s new initiative, In His Image 2012, explains how such policies are rooted in the anti-human ideologies underlying the population-control, eugenics, and environmental movement. Your generous, tax-deductible donation helps us fight policies like this that cause human suffering.

Climate Change: The Anti-Industrial Agenda (Eternal Vigilance Necessary)
(E. Calvin Beisner, July 18, 2012, Master Resource)
Also featured on Junk Science. What is it that we must be vigilant against? The impetus of environmentalism: state control and socialism.

Tackling Spiritual Warfare on Large Scale (Chris Woodward, July 22, 2012, One News Now)
The American Family Association’s One News Now (here also) commended the Cornwall Alliance’s In His Image 2012 for helping Christians recognize the common roots of many social problems like environmentalism, abortion, and sexual confusion.

What the Evangelical Environmentalists Don't Consider About Economics

Cornwall Alliance Senior Fellow Dr. Timothy Terrell speaks at the Ludwig Von Mises Institute about evangelical environmentalists’ failure to recognize the economic harms generated by their demands.

Scripture for the Week

Genesis 26: 6 & 12–14 & 19–20 & 22 (ESV)
So Isaac settled in Gerar…. And Isaac sowed in that land and reaped in the same year a hundredfold. The Lord blessed him, and the man became rich, and gained more and more until he became very wealthy. He had possessions of flocks and herds and many servants, so that the Philistines envied him…. But when Isaac's servants dug in the valley and found there a well of spring water,  the herdsmen of Gerar quarreled with Isaac's herdsmen, saying, “The water is ours”…. And he moved from there and dug another well, and they did not quarrel over it. So he called its name Rehoboth, saying, “For now the Lord has made room for us, and we shall be fruitful in the land.”

Recent Significant Developments

Science and Ecology

NCDC : June 2012 Was 15th Hottest In US History (Steven Goddard, July 13, 2012, Steven Goddard’s Blog)
The world has not warmed since 1995, but that still leaves us at a temperature plateau; we should expect warmer summers, which are not necessarily bad, and certainly not unprecedented. In this century alone we’ve had 14 hotter summers. Furthermore, the U.S. is somewhat unique in its heat right now, and even then only the Eastern U.S. (More here.)

IPCC Admits Its Past Reports Were Junk (Joseph Bast, July 16, 2012, American Thinker)
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change announces that it has now conformed with the InterAcademy Council’s recommendations to improve its abysmally inaccurate reports. How well, only the future will tell. But the IAC’s findings suggest past reports were so biased as to make their findings useless.

Climate was HOTTER in Roman, Medieval Times Than Now: Study (Lewis Page, July 10, 2012, The Register)

“A large team of scientists making a comprehensive study of data from tree rings say that in fact global temperatures have been on a falling trend for the past 2,000 years and they have often been noticeably higher than they are today—despite the absence of any significant amounts of human-released carbon dioxide in the atmosphere back then.” In a related item, a new paper claims about half of 20th-century global warming on faulty weather station data homogenization.

Economics and Energy

Tom Vilsack Doesn’t Believe in Supply and Demand (Brian McGraw, July 16, 2012, Globalwarming.org)
Agriculture Secratary Tom Vilsack does not believe in the economic law of supply and demand. During the current drought, which has hurt many crop yields, Vilsack believes it is immoral to raise prices. Sorry, Tom. It’s support of ethanol fuel mandates that is immoral. (More here.)

Caught In a Green Crossfire (Paul Driessen, July 13, 2012, Eurasian Review)

President Obama continues his war on coal despite the failing economy—killing profitable jobs while subsidizing unprofitable “Green” jobs. “In reality, the only thing ‘green’ about his ideologically driven energy policies is the money leaving our wallets. Mr. Obama’s energy policy isn’t about serving American consumers.”

Why European Shale Is Totally 'Fracked' (Matthew Hulbert, July 12, 2012, Forbes)
The rising cost of energy, largely due to taxes and other penalties on carbon emitting energy sources, accompanied by several large finds of natural gas and oil in Western Europe, has created a growing strain in the minds of government officials and consumers alike. (More here, here, and here.)

Religion and Ethics

The Other Scandal In Unhappy Valley (Rand Simberg, July 13, 2012, Openmarket.org)
Penn State University has been at the epicenter of not one, but two cover-up scandals, the less-known of which surrounded climate scientists climate alarmist Michael Mann’s covering up data damaging to his assertions of dangerous manmade global warming.

UK Police Close 'Climategate' investigation (Raphael Satter, July 19, 2012, Business Week)
“British police have closed their three-year investigation into the theft of hundreds of climate science emails published to the Web, saying Wednesday there was no hope of finding any suspects behind the breach. The theft, dubbed ‘Climategate’ by some, caught researchers at the University of East Anglia's Climatic Research Unit discussing ways to dodge right-to-know requests, keep opponents' research out of peer-reviewed journals, and destroy data.”

Law, Regulation, and Litigation

Dissecting the Carbon Tax (Kenneth Green, July 13, 2012, The American)
The influx of natural gas to the energy market has created, simply out of market conditions, a decline in carbon dioxide emissions. Thus, a carbon cap and tax system presents no benefits to the environment, and a lot of pain to the economy.

The Not-So-Great 'Green Fleet': President Obama’s Skewed National Defense Priorities (James Inhofe, July 17, 2012, The Hill)
“As the Department of Defense (DoD) faces drastic budget cuts, the last thing the military needs is to be forced by President Obama to spend billions of taxpayer dollars on an expensive green energy agenda,” which includes paying a minimum of from $27 to as much as $424 per gallon of “green” fuel.

How Insider Politics Saved California's Train to Nowhere (Allysia Finley, July 13, 2012, Wall Street Journal)

The ever more expensive California state-long bullet train has been approved for construction despite inadequate public funding, no promise, and little incentive for private funding, amid speculation of much insider political scheming. While the train is touted as an environmental chess-piece, environmentalists apparently disagree.

Politics and Debate

EU Energy Chief Oettinger Warns of Deindustrialization (July 16, 2012, Reuters)

European Union Energy Commissioner Guenther Oettinger warns that environmentalist concerns are shrinking the economy and will lead to de-industrialization. This would actually be worse for the environment, since wealthier societies have more power to make a clean society. Oettinger recommends adding a new goal to the EU’s stated environmentalist goals, but what he seems to miss is that the two are incompatible.

Average Chinese Person's Carbon Footprint Now Equals European's (Duncan Clark, July 18, 2012, The Guardian)
“The average Chinese person's carbon footprint is now almost on a par with the average European's, figures released on Wednesday reveal. China became the largest national emitter of CO2 in 2006, though its emissions per person have always been lower than those in developed countries such as Europe.”

Coal Mining Layoffs Have Domino Effect on Businesses (Catherine Moxley, July 18, 2012, WSAZ News Channel)

The EPA’s war against coal mines has brought economic tragedy to the West Virginia town of Logan. It will be the first of many if the EPA is not stopped. (Similar story here.)

Food, Agriculture, and Health

Ethanol Added $14.5 Billion to Consumer Motor Fuel Costs in 2011, Study Finds (Marlo Lewis, July 19, 2012, Globalwarming.org)
Restricting supply of a food crop in one area raises the price of food crops in all other areas, as well as costing consumers more for fuel by decreasing fuel economy. (More here.)

Polar Bears and Inuit Are Victims of Environmental Hysteria and Inadequate Science, Not Global Warming (Dr. Tim Ball, July 18, 2012, Drtimball.com)
Polar Bears are thriving despite predictions of decline, much to the chagrin of environmentalists, and to the benefit of the Inuit people.

CFL Bulbs May Pose Risk to Skin (Brian McGraw, July 23, 2012 Globalwarming.org)

A new study says the Ultra-Violet emissions of Compact Fluorescent Bulbs may cause skin damage. While it is far from proven, it should remind us that every new action brings risk, and the market is the best means of determining acceptable risk.

A Special Message from
Cornwall Alliance Founder Dr. E. Calvin Beisner

Restoring the Glory, Dignity, and Purpose

of People in God’s Created Order

First it was the demand that religious organizations provide health insurance for contraception and abortion.

Next it was Presidential support for same-sex “marriage.”

Then, shockingly, it was the Supreme Court upholding a health care law that, among other travesties, will ration life-saving medical treatments and provide taxpayer funding for abortion on demand.

And through it all, families are hurting and countless jobs are being lost as America’s bountiful energy resources are locked away and burdensome new regulations are passed all based on false claims of environmental crisis.

Is there any solution?

I believe the answer is a resounding Yes!

With your help, I believe we can begin to turn the tide on some of the most critical issues facing America…

…and even gain a powerful new pathway for advancing the saving gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ.

What is the key?

Helping people understand that we are made In His Image!

I know it sounds too simple.

But I believe this foundational Biblical truth could open the door to a monumental shift in how our society views a host of important issues.

Genesis 1:27 reveals the essence of man: the image of God, male and female.

Genesis 1:28 reveals the mission of man: to be fruitful and multiply, fill the Earth, and subdue and rule over it.

These well-known but largely ignored verses tell us who we are, and why we are here.

They tell us why:
  • Abortion and euthanasia are immoral.
  • Marriage is between one man and one woman.
  • Sexual promiscuity and homosexuality destroy individuals, families, and society.
  • Overpopulation is a myth, and population control is dangerous.
  • Earth stewardship, not radical environmentalism, is the path to the flourishing of humanity and all life on Earth.
  • People are the greatest natural resource of all.
And best of all, these verses open the door to explaining to a lost generation how we can be restored to true image-bearing through salvation in Jesus Christ.

Before America heads to the polls this November to shape our nation’s future, I need your help launching “In His Image 2012,” the start of a multi-year effort to completely reshape how people think of human beings and our role on Earth—to reassert the sanctity of human life and sexuality, the beauty and centrality of marriage, the goodness of human multiplication, and the dignity of human work and godly dominion over the Earth.

So I want to invite you to become one of a small, special group of people—a new “Gideon’s Army,” so to speak—willing to generously donate $28 per month for our “In His Image 2012” campaign.

Just 300 people contributing a tax-deductible gift of $28 per month will provide the budget to help us:
  • Reach over 500 churches in 10 states, and conduct special pastors’ briefings, beginning with a few states and, God willing, spreading nationwide.
  • Educate political leaders in our nation’s capital and state legislatures.
  • Reach out to over 2,500 reporters and producers in the mainstream and Christian media.
  • Provide study guides and materials to teachers, students, and laymen in select states about the grave dangers of the Green radical environmental agenda, and the blessings of genuinely Biblical Earth stewardship.
  • Begin to develop an evangelism program based on Genesis 1:27-28 which uses environmental issues as a platform for the Gospel, and shows how true image-bearing can only occur through a relationship with the perfect Image of God, the Lord Jesus Christ.
Will you stand with us in this critical effort?

Please sign up for an automatic tax-deductible donation of just $28 per month, or whatever you can afford, to help us defend and promote these foundational Biblical truths.

And please make sure to indicate a monthly contribution on the form to maximize your support!

“… You have made him a little lower than the angels,

and you have crowned him with glory and honor.”—Psalm 8:5
