Panetta’s Agenda?

by Douglas Gregory, Research & Communications Specialist, Cornwall Alliance for the Stewardship of Creation
May 15, 2012

Many true believers in climate catastrophe liken skeptics to criminals. Their preferred method of punishment is not just a harsh scolding. The likes of Steve Zwick, Mark Lynas, and other leading climate alarmistsbelieve notable climate skeptics should be held liable for not quietly granting them global governmental and economic control for the sake of climate salvation.

Property seizure, psychological treatment, legal censorship, civil fines and punishment, and even treatment expected for war criminals are recommended. Never mind that it is not the skeptics who undermine public belief in catastrophic, anthropogenic global warming, but alarmists’ own failures: the scientific misconduct demonstrated in Climategate, the myriad of violations of its own rules by the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change that resulted in publishing as fact bogus claims by environmental advocacy groups, the repeated failure of doomsday predictions, and the advocating of economy- crushing “cures” for global warming. The Cornwall Alliance has frequently come under attack by climate alarmists for its advocacy of Biblical Earth Stewardship, and the battle is fought among politicians (e.g., Leon Panetta).

Climate alarmists’ demands for retribution on skeptics are disturbing by themselves, and makes recent statements by defense Secretary Leon Panetta chilling to the bone. “The area of climate change has a dramatic impact on national security," Panetta said in a speech to the Environmental Defense Fund. Perhaps he was playing to the crowd, but I doubt it. He claims that disastrous weather events intensified by global warming would have to be cleaned up by the U.S. government. Yet repeated empirical studies have fail to find evidence that severe weather events have increased as the Earth has warmed. Further since the beginning of the twentieth century, annual deaths caused by disastrous, extreme weather have fallen by 93 percent, and the death rate per million of the population has fallen 98 percent. Accordingly there is no need, and certainly no growing need for military response to weather disasters.

Is this some sort of awkward power-grab? Climate alarmists have long been trying to control governments at every level to institute their ideology— just see Agenda 21. What is the future of climate skepticism in America given the dwindling rights of citizens in the United States? If climate change is a national security issue, will that mean skepticism is a form of opposition to national security? That can include some pretty heavy penalties. Panetta’s statements compound the widespread concerns of censorship, criminalization, and punitive taxation.

The Cornwall Alliance is dedicated to opposing government control by secularist environmentalists and seeks to educate people about the faulty science, economics, and ethics of environmentalism, but we can’t do that without your support. For the sake of ensuring a future where our children can enjoy the same blessings we enjoy, please consider donating to the Cornwall Alliance’s work in fighting wayward politicians, scientists, and activists, as well as engaging culture.
