Calling Cap and Tax a Job Bill Doesn’t Veto Economic Reality

By E. Calvin Beisner, Ph.D.

In case you were wondering whether Senators Kerry and Lieberman had found a way to cancel economic reality by creating a government program that would create more jobs than it destroys, the answer’s in. Congressional Budget Office says policy like the “American Power Act” would destroy more jobs than it creates. The economic reason’s simple. Jobs that produce more value than they consume get funded voluntarily by profit seekers. Jobs that can be created only by government mandate are by definition jobs that consume more value than they create. Consequently, they don’t get funded voluntarily. The only reason for government mandates of jobs, therefore, is that they’re losers. The deficit is wasted capital that can’t be used to create other jobs. Net: fewer jobs created.
